Lately I have been seeing a post on social media stating, “I’m an entrepreneur, I’m always busy”. The phrase sounds catchy but being busy is not something that entrepreneurs should strive for. We should always strive for productivity.
Being busy simply means you always have something to do; you spend most of your time doing “stuff” but aren’t progressing, you oftentimes are doing several task at once. Productivity means you are producing something, you’re being efficient, and results driven.
- Know the goal you are trying to accomplish
First things first, set goals and know what you would like to accomplish. It’s imperative that you set Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely (SMART) goals. Setting goals is one of the most important steps to being productive versus being busy. Busy people often don’t set SMART goals; they jump into things without an action plan and end up going in circles.
Create a to do list of action items and label each item according to high, moderate, or low priority. Creating a to do list is one of the most simple task that takes about five minutes to do that will eventually save you much time in the end. When you prioritize properly you will be able to set and meet deadlines, this way you are able to now measure your results and check progress of what you’ve accomplished. When you don’t prioritize it is extremely difficult to stay on track or create a plan, or even achieve your goals.
- Stay focused
It is beyond easy to get sidetrack, especially when you are excited about business and accomplishing your goals but the key is to stay focused and keep your eye on the end goal. Not staying focused can put you back in a busy state because you begin to dibble and dabble into multiple task and projects that lead to other things.
The main key to being productive is time management.
